Newsom Eye First In Florida To Implant Innovative Multifocal Progressive Lens

SBL-3 ClearView lens from St. Petersburg Lenstec provides significant visual improvements for distance, intermediate, and near

TAMPA, Fla. (August 16, 2022)

For those suffering from cataracts, a new innovative technology offered by Tampa Bay’s leading eye doctor, can significantly improve their sight.

Today, Dr. T. Hunter Newsom and the Newsom Eye team implanted the first FDA approved SBL-3 ClearView Multifocal Intraocular Lens (IOL). The company was the first in Florida to use the implant lens and the first in the Eastern United States to perform the surgery.

“This lens is the first of its kind in existence,” Newsom says. “We are pleased to offer this innovative technology to our patients to help them live life with Newsom Eyes and not need glasses for distance or near vision.”

The SBL-3 IOL is an innovation from St. Petersburg’s Lenstec and was designed with increased precision, accuracy, and stability, which results in excellent long-term visual outcomes at distance, intermediate, and near. The lens is implanted immediately after cataract removal during cataract surgery.

Simply put, the implant is similar to wearing a pair of progressive lenses where the top portion of the lens focuses on distance vision and the bottom portion focuses on near vision. One of the key benefits of the ClearView IOL is that the lens does not cause rings and halos at night like other diffractive or multifocal IOLs.

Newsom and his team were involved as the lead investigator during the FDA trial of this innovative technology.

“Working with Dr. Newsom and his team has been a critical step in the process of bringing this new technology to market,” says Lenstec’s Jimmy Chacko, Vice President, Regulatory Affairs. “His willingness to find new and innovative ways to help his patients is one of the key reasons we choose to work with Newsom Eye and are looking forward to seeing our efforts help people through the Tampa Bay area and beyond.”
